McLaren: “hell sucks?”

with 2 comments

Christian Research Network quotes Brian McLaren:

“Tony [Campolo] and I might disagree on the details, but I think we are both trying to find an alternative to both traditional Universalism and the narrow, exclusivist understanding of hell [that unless you explicitly accept and follow Jesus, you are excluded from eternal life with God and destined for hell].”

An alternative to the exclusivity of Christ? I’m thinking Galatians 1:6-9…

  1. I wonder who gave MacLaren and Campolo the license to find an alternative to anything.

    The doctrines of demons.

  2. Wow… This doesn’t surprise me too much, because this is exactly where the emergent church has been going for years. Unfortunately, we need to get it through our heads that people of our generation and younger aren’t leaving Fundamentalism mainly due to the worldliness of these churches (i.e.- music), though that is certainly a selling point for some. The main reason these guys are getting listened to at all is that we’ve been so busy hobby horsing these guys in our pulpits, we’ve failed to put The Word out (pun intended) as to what Scriptures do teach. It isn’t wrong to point this stuff out and use it as illustrations as part of sermons on these doctrines as passages allow, but let’s make sure that we spend our time preaching The Word (2 Tim. 4:2) and the proper biblical doctrines therein, rather than the heresies and hobby horses without.
